In the spirit of Bird Safe Philly, working to reduce bird-window collisions through education, outreach, and window treatments, we would like to introduce our newest program, Bird Safe Schools!
What is
Bird Safe Schools?
Bird Safe Schools is an effort led by Liberty Bird Alliance (formerly Wyncote Audubon Society) and provides presentations to students and their teachers on the issue of bird-window collisions and more importantly what THEY can do to help. The program also encourages students to carry out collision reduction projects at their own schools.
If you would like to bring Bird Safe Schools to your classroom, please contact libertybirdalliance@gmail.com today!
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (SCH) in Philadelphia, bordering the vibrant woods of the Wissahickon, had documented window collisions at the Lower School’s cafeteria. The cafeteria’s floor to ceiling windows have transparency and reflective issues, both of which are problematic for birds. In spring 2023, the 3rd grade science teachers and their students led the charge and installed Feather Friendly® bird collision deterrents to the glass along with custom vinyl decals of bird species found in the forest, completing Phase 1 of this project. This year, the 3rd graders completed Phase 2 of the cafeteria, making the entire space bird-friendly! SCH officially has now become our first Bird Safe School! They plan to continue this project on the Lower School and also address problem windows at the Middle School in 2025.
